IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Taryon Darrington
Species: Human
Canon: Critical Role
Canon Point: Campaign 1 Episode 107, after receiving the message that Vox Machina is okay.
Character Age: 29
CRAU: No
CRAU Explanation: N/A
Character Appearance: From his official description: "Taryon is a handsome human male with shoulder-length, feathered, dirty blonde hair. He has blue-green eyes and a well-groomed goatee adorning his dashing smirk. His svelte frame is clad in a set of polished barely-used breastplate armor, while he carries numerous satchels, jewelry, and other adornments."
Underneath the armor, Taryon wears high-quality clothing, including leather gloves. He wears a Earring of Whisper in one ear, fashioned as a large, dangling gem.
Powers and Abilities:
- infusing magic into items (temporarily or permanently, given enough time)
- casting support spells (cure wounds, revivify, jump, haste, fly, invisibility, sanctuary, detect magic, identify, alter self, blur, and enhance ability)
- mechanical engineering (he built a robot on his own)
- crafting magic items
- ability quickly use any magical equipment he finds
- brewing alchemical potions to use in battle. These include healing potions, speed potions, and offensive concoctions like acid and fire
What Did Your Character Wish For? That his friends will be safe while saving the world.
What Potion Did They Receive? Red (lighting)
Did They Drink It? Yes, once someone explained what it does.
Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?
Before he met Vox Machina, Taryon would say his closest companion would be Doty, the automaton he built to be his friend. Being a lonely rich kid with a father who disliked him, Taryon found comfort in his quasi-imaginary friend, who was more of a mechanical servant than a person.
Once he settled into the group dynamic, his closest bond was with Vex, despite her icy reception when they first met. Like she, Taryon had complicated feelings about his father who he desperately sought the approval of despite his horrible treatment of his children. They became housemates during the timeskip, during which he enchanted armor for her and she became his conversation partner. For her wedding ceremony, he was chosen to be her Man of Honor.
2. What are they most afraid of?
Taryon fears rejection - he was rejected by his father growing up, and he was willing to go beyond his comfort zone in the hopes that he could live up to his own idea of what he should be. The idea that he isn't "good enough" for someone else can put him into a bad state if he doesn't have friends to remind him otherwise.
His primary reason for leaving home was to seek his father's approval and get concrete proof that he was "worthy" - of love, of his inheritance, and of respect. Even after his adventures with Vox Machina, he sometimes tries hard to come off as cool so people won't look over him. He no longer literally pays people to hang out with him, but the idea of being alone is unnerving, especially if it also means being forced to be something he's not. In his adventures, Taryon learned about the kind of person he really is, and that man is not the heir that his father wanted. He's happier with friends that support his own interests and desires.
3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?
At the start, Taryon is rather naive, believing that the world works like his books before the harshness of reality fixes that. He remains idealistic, though his need for others to think highly of him can lead him to making rash decisions. He trusts NPCs and new people immediately, beleiving that they couldn't mean harm unless obvious evidence proves otherwise. It's easy to prank him, since he doesn't notice suspicious behavior easily.
He's slow to speak up when upset, rather internalizing his frustration and letting it out when he's reached his limit (such as when Doty was destroyed and they were thrown into prison in Hell) or when pushed to do so (telling off his father after securing the Darrington estate under his own name). He's used to accepting that bad things will happen to him, so he might as well deal with it until the end.
Taryon isn't a physically strong fighter, and he's pretty bad at battle at this canon point. What keeps him from being useless is all his equipment doing the heavy lifting for him and his spells. He's determined, but that doesn't mean he can survive long on a one-on-one battle.
Coming from a rich family, Taryon has a lot to learn when it comes to practical world knowledge. He's learned some basic life skills while living with Vex, but surviving in the wilderness is rough for him.
4. What would make them happiest?
Being surrounded by people who love him as he is, being praised for his skills, and going around helping people with his inventions and bravery, like the heroes of the books he grew up with. Taryon used to think that things would be better if he became the ideal son his father wanted, but he learned he needs his independence and to be true to himself. Having the freedom to go out and have fun is important to him.
5. What’s their type for a lover?
A strong, tall, handsome, intelligent man who wants to spent the night either discussing high-brow topics and making sweet love in equal measure. Taryon is a big romantic, and he would love someone who indulges in his fantasies of being a heroic adventurer sweeping gentlemen off their feet. Taryon veers towards more "serious" types that don't look down on his goofier tendencies.
