CHARACTER NAME: Taryon Darrington CHARACTER AGE: 29 CANON: Critical Role CANON POINT: Post-Vox Machina campaign, before the Dalen's Closet one-shot SUITABILITY: While Taryon has been adventuring for little over a year, within two weeks of joining Vox Machina, he went through a rather violent hazing, survived a Kraken attack underwater, traveled to the Second Circle of Hell, fought a demon one-on-one (he didn't kill it himself, but he did engage it until Taryon was near-death), and barely escaped a torture prison with his life. Everything after that was a relative breeze, and he gained a lot of experience in those quests, including understanding his own limitations in battle. More importantly, he learned how to work in a team to take down a powerful enemy. In such battles, it's important that each party member plays into their own strengths, whether it's in dealing damage, managing crowds of monsters, protecting the others, or being backup fighters. He knows that he can't simply charge into a fight and slash the enemy open - he has to keep himself safe. The trope that best describes his battle style is "weak but skilled". Taryon is an artificer, a support class in Dungeons and Dragons, who creates and uses all sorts of magical tools, weapons, and potions for battle, but is capable of directly combating monsters. He has spells that primarily protect a target, give them greater mobility, or heal them - some of his potions function similarly. His gadgets, including a robot sidekick, do the heavy damage, and his strength lies in his ability to understand and use any weapon or tool he comes across. His personal fighting style centers on tactically using the supplies he has at his disposal while utilizing defensive/support spells - he won a Battle Royale through unconventional use of tools, drawing attention away from himself, exploiting his opponent's low mental scores, and stat buffs. While the setting might not have all the materials he needs to rebuild some of his inventions or potions, Taryon can cobble something together with enough experimenting. Even without his magical tools, he is an analytical, scientific man who can help with research and development, albeit with a magical background. Artificers study the intersection of magic and technology, which requires knowledge of casting magic and mechanics. Despite growing up stupidly wealthy, Taryon has proven himself to be a hard worker, even leading his friend's (non-magic) workshop for a year. I anticipate that with enough time, he can learn about modern robotics and coding given that he's self-taught on the fantasy equivalent of mechatronics. Otherwise, he can try enchanting his own droid or make modifications on existing ones. Taryon would excel in the preparation stage of kaiju battles. In canon before battles, he infused one-time-use spells for his allies, and when given weeks or months, improved their equipment to be safer, do more damage, etc. His Alchemical formulas allow him to fight directly, and if he collects enough weapons, he could regain his standard fighting style of using whichever one suits each moment. While his home planet of Exandria doesn't resemble Neo Tokyo, Taryon is a curious man who tries to explore everything about the world around him. He'll want to learn all about the lifestyle of the people, learn how to use their technology, and incorporate it into his fighting style. While he would trust LILITH initially for their mission to protect the world, the themes of control and brainwashing may bring up memories of his childhood, living under the iron fist of his abusive father. His character arc had him learn how to break free of the mental hold created by his need for his father's approval and become his own man. Excess cruelty could have him turn against NPCs or PCs, and he'd be wary of potential manipulation, as his father attempted to gaslight him and paint himself a martyr when they were reunited. In terms of dark themes, Taryon has watched his friends die, be revived, and get nasty injuries while exploring other planes of existence. He's aware how horrifying reality can be, even though he's an idealist at heart. By the end of his arc, he's found the courage to be steadfast in his own beliefs, even confronting his father and stripping him of his legal power.
PERSONALITY TRAITS: Loving/Supportive Adaptable - and doesn't really judge others, though he's often confused by new situations Hard-working Optimistic Socially Unaware - and often comes off as annoying or rude, and he's awful at reading people. Impulsive Boastful Gullible

POWERS & SKILLS: In the main campaign, Taryon uses the Alchemist subclass and transitions into the Battlesmith subclass post-campaign. Out of universe, this is because Artificer was not yet officially released when he first appeared, and the beta version was underdeveloped and deemed rather weak. The class was revised and balanced shortly after the Vox Machina campaign ended, and his character sheet was revised according to the new guidelines. In-universe, this represents his development from a rich kid who depends on his money and equipment to keep up with the high-level party members to an experienced adventurer who can take care of himself in battle. I will be using a mix of both character sheets. One, because it's a representation of where he is with his arc. Two, because keeping him firmly as the beta version of Alchemist limits his usefulness. The tinkering he did during the main campaign is similar to some of the infusions available in the final version. His main class ability, Infuse Magic, allows him enchant small items or equipment with one-time-use spells for others to activate. Given enough time, he can add a permanent magical property. In his canon, he's built a flying broom, added cold resistance to armor, and creating earrings to be used as a two-way radio. During the main campaign, Taryon cast the following spells and provided coins with one-time use versions of them:
  • Cure Wounds - heals minor to medium wounds
  • Jump - triples the target's jumping distance for up to one minute
  • Invisibility - lasts up to one hour
  • Sanctuary - when cast, the attacker must overcome a mental block to make a move, which can stall for time. Sanctuary breaks when the protected person makes an offensive move.
  • Detect Magic - Sense the presence of magic within 30 feet.
  • Identify - a spell that gives the user a brief description of what an item is
  • Alter Self - physical alteration that can make you look like someone else, add gills, etc. for up to one hour
  • Fly - lasts up to 10 minutes
  • Blur - Makes someone harder to hit for up to one minute
  • Enhance Ability - lasts up to one hour
  • Haste - lasts up to one minute
  • In the official version of Artificer, the list of spells he can infuse grows. I will use the table under "Replicate Magic Item" for what he can enchant, temporarily or permanently. In this game, Taryon will not be able to use these enchantments during a battle; this is a representation of what he can build in a workshop. Taryon learns martial-aligned spells that make him more useful in a physical fight when he becomes a Battlesmith. However, I headcanon this to be the result of a decade of training, and in this game, he will stick to tinkering and using tools. Taryon can build gadgets, mundane and magical. His robot assistant, Doty (who will not be coming to this setting), is his most complex work, with the ability to understand commands and fight in battle. Essentially, Taryon is capable of building a droid as long as he has a magical source and inscribes the proper runes. In this setting, he will experiment with adding magical properties to robots and work in magitech. The alchemical creations he can use, given access to a lab, are:
  • Alchemical Acid
  • Alchemical Fire
  • Healing Draught
  • Smoke Stick
  • Swift Step Draught
  • Tanglefoot bag (a bag fill with tar, resin, and other sticky material that coats a small area when thrown)
  • Taryon was also raised to take over his father's real estate business, and he's knowledgeable in topics such as tax codes, banking, and economics. NERFED POWERS: One of the spells that Taryon can cast and infuse is Revivify, which revives a dead teammate. This will be unavailable.
PERSONAL ITEM: The Rod of Mercurial Form, which Taryon can transform into a basic sword, axe, spear, and crossbow. He has the option to set the transformed weapon on fire ALTERNATE IDENTITY: Gary Jumbo, sales clerk at a fandom merchandise store CODE NAME CHOICE: Something that references gold or fairy tales like Goldilocks or GoldenKnight, but something goofy will also fit him
